Interview with Becky Wu, Opera Singer, Ms. China 2023, and Ms. Senior United Nations Ambassador 2023
In the resplendent atmosphere of Paris Fashion Week, I had the privilege of sitting down with Becky Wu, a woman whose regal poise and multifaceted talents have garnered her international recognition. Becky’s journey from opera stages to pageantry platforms, and now as a global ambassador for women's empowerment, is a testament to her passion and perseverance.
"You’re an opera singer and hold multiple pageant titles, right?" I began, marveling at her eclectic accomplishments.
Becky nodded gracefully, her smile radiant. "Yes, I hold three titles," she clarified. "In 2019, I won Miss Senior Nevada. Then, last year, I was crowned Miss Senior China Universe and also Miss Senior United Nations Ambassador for 2023." Her modesty and gratitude were palpable as she spoke about these achievements. "I’m truly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and for the support from the senior pageant group. It’s been an incredible journey."
When asked how she balances her life as an opera singer with the world of pageantry, Becky’s passion for both art and community service became evident. "I come from a science background, actually. I studied cryogenic engineering and worked with NASA papers during my master’s program. But after retirement, I delved deeply into the arts, especially opera singing. It was a long-time hobby that became my second passion," she explained.
Her dual roles as an opera singer and a titleholder allowed her to merge artistic expression with cultural pride. "I sing Chinese opera as well as American opera, and through both, I convey my heritage and my love for music. It’s a unique way to connect with people from different cultures. This blend of art and culture has helped me serve my community better, especially in Las Vegas, where I’m actively involved in the Asian Pacific Islander Council and the Veteran Action Foundation."
Becky’s work extends far beyond the stage. As a philanthropist and advocate for the Asian American community, she tirelessly works on various initiatives to foster cultural pride and support marginalized groups. "I founded the Phoenix Arts Group in Charlotte, which has a fashion team, a choir, a folk dance group, and a traditional Chinese music ensemble. It’s a way to give back and ensure that younger generations understand and cherish their roots," she added with pride.
Her passion for community service led to her crowning moment as the United Nations Ambassador. "Last March 8th, on International Women's Day, I had the honor of attending the celebration at the United Nations in New York. It was incredibly inspiring to be surrounded by women from all over the world, hearing the UN Secretary-General’s speech about women’s rights and empowerment. I felt a deep responsibility to use my platform to uplift women, especially Asian American women, and to advocate for their representation on the global stage."
The conversation shifted naturally to fashion and Becky’s involvement in Paris Fashion Week. "This is my first time participating in Paris Fashion Week," she revealed with palpable excitement. "Fashion has been a part of my life for over 20 years. I founded a fashion team as part of the Phoenix Arts Group in Charlotte, and we worked with a professional fashion designer and models for various international competitions."
I asked her how she hopes to merge her love for opera and fashion to create a lasting impact during Paris Fashion Week.
"Fashion is like opera in many ways—it’s expressive, it’s art, it’s storytelling. Through both, I hope to inspire other women, especially Asian women, to step into the spotlight and be proud of who they are. This platform allows me to show that age, background, or profession doesn’t limit you. You can be anything you aspire to be."
Becky’s love for fashion, rooted in traditional Chinese garments, shines through. "I brought my qipao with me to Paris," she shared, her eyes lighting up as she delicately unfolded a beautiful handmade dress. "This piece represents not only my culture but also the deep history and artistry of Chinese craftsmanship. I want young Asian women to embrace both their heritage and the global opportunities available to them. It’s about being proud of where we come from, while also forging new paths."
Despite being a seasoned traveler—this was her fourth time in Paris—Becky was visibly moved by the grandeur of Paris Fashion Week. "It’s a dream come true," she said. "The professionalism, the creativity—it’s all so inspiring. I’m learning so much from this experience, and I feel a renewed sense of purpose to continue representing Asian women on global platforms."
Becky also emphasized her dedication to passing on cultural values to future generations. "It’s crucial for young people to stay connected to their heritage. My daughter, for example, wore a red qipao I had tailored for her and won a title for cultural identity in a pageant. It’s these small but significant acts that help maintain our traditions while embracing modernity."
As our interview drew to a close, Becky reflected on her journey and what she hopes to achieve next. "I want to encourage more Asian American women to step forward, to be visible, and to have their voices heard. Whether through fashion, music, or community service, we can contribute in so many ways. It’s time to shine on the stage, to support one another, and to show the world what we’re capable of."
Becky Wu’s story is one of resilience, grace, and boundless creativity. As she prepares to take her place on the stage at Paris Fashion Week, she embodies the essence of a modern renaissance woman—blending the worlds of opera, fashion, and philanthropy to create a lasting legacy that will inspire generations to come.
