2. Bolster

Significantly, a full bolster adds the most weight and safety, but it is more challenging to employ your entire blade. This is why we prefer a half bolster, often a diagonal bolster. It provides some protection and just enough weight for a good balance while allowing you to use the entire length of your blade. A knife’s tang describes how far the blade’s metal reaches into the handle.
