As I stepped through the gates of the French Embassy in Washington, DC, on Saturday evening (September 20th) promised more than a mere gathering—it felt like a return to elegance, to the joyful pulse of “la rentrée,” where French culture, community, and charm burst into bloom. The Garden Party de la Rentrée had indeed arrived.
The gardens glowed under early fall twilight—soft golden light filtering through trees, lanterns dotted here and there, gently swaying. Guests milling about, champagne flutes in hand, greeted one another with warm “bonsoir”s and delighted laughter. The buzz was one of anticipation: of food, of fashion, of wine, of chance.
A Feast for All Senses
Shortly after arrival, I found myself drawn to the VIP section, where unlimited champagne flowed and personal service made one feel both honored and at ease. Outside, the general admission area offered its own pleasures: tables overflowing with crêpes, summer ice cream, luscious Bayonne ham, and the savory depth of classic French cuisine as imagined by Chef Daniel Labonné. Each dish told a story—of terroir, tradition, and the artistry French gastronomy is celebrated for.

Not far off, a fine selection of wines awaited from Vin sur Vingt Logan Circle—rich Bordeaux reds, crisp Loire whites, and perhaps the soft blush of a Provence rosé to pair with the light evening air.
Fashion & Flair in the Embassy
Partway through the soirée, Le Showroom de Lise unveiled a runway where silhouettes glinted in soft light, fabric flowing in movement, color evoking Paris—and a flair that felt transported, yet intimate. The elegance was well paired with French With Élodie, whose travel expertise added another dimension—a whisper of wanderlust to the gentle hum of the evening.
A red carpet stretched gracefully, offering photo moments, laughter, and shared style. Fashion and culture intertwined: not only what we wore, but how we live, how we connect.
Music & Community under the Stars
Live music drifted through the Embassy gardens—Julien Xuereb’s voice carrying over the gathering, a warm contrast to the DJ Dupree set later, pulsing with rhythm and modernity. Diplomats, professionals, lovers of French life, and curious newcomers—all mingled. Glasses clinked, conversations sparked from table to terrace. Strangers became acquaintances, acquaintances exchanged best wishes, and the air felt alive with possibility.
The Delightful Details
A raffle prize whispered promises of Paris—a round-trip flight that seemed both faraway and close enough to dream.
Every corner felt curated: from the Bayonne ham station (thin-sliced, melting on the tongue), to the desserts by Fresh Baguette that hit the perfect balance of airy sweetness.
The open bar, premium beverages, it was more than indulgence. It was celebration: of culture, return, shared identity.
Reflections as the Night Deepens
As dusk turned deeper and the stars made their appearance, the Garden Party de la Rentrée unfolded as a tapestry woven of elegance and belonging. This was not an event that simply showcased French style—it extended an embrace to its community, both French and Francophile, to those who cherish what France offers: art, gastronomy, wine, style, warmth.
Walking away, I carried with me the laughter, the scent of fresh flowers and wine, the soft echo of music, and perhaps most of all, the sense that this gathering—this rentrée—was more than a moment. It was a renewal.
