Beyond the Microphone: Kelsey Nicole Nelson and the Power of Showing Up

In Washington, leadership does not always happen behind a podium. Sometimes it is found in the ability to move between different worlds: media, education, entrepreneurship and community; and bring people together along the way. Kelsey Nicole Nelson has built her career at precisely that intersection.

An award-winning sports journalist, Nelson has worked across television, radio and digital media, covering some of the country’s biggest sporting events, including the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, WNBA Finals and World Series. She hosts Listen In With KNN, works with FOX Sports Radio and serves as a color commentator for American University women’s basketball.   

But Nelson’s presence in Washington increasingly extends beyond sports. On August 25–26, 2026, Nelson participated in Take The Lead’s Power Up 2026: Audacity: Leadership in Action, a Washington gathering centered on women, leadership and opportunity. The event brought together voices from business, media and public life, reinforcing a theme that has become central to Nelson’s own career: leadership is as much about creating opportunities for others as it is about personal achievement.

That philosophy also appears in her work away from the microphone. Nelson has more than a decade of experience involving communications, community organizing and coalition building, and her professional background includes partnerships with civil-rights organizations, educators, parent-led organizations and advocacy groups. She has also expanded into education and entrepreneurship, teaching the next generation of communicators while developing her branding and communications work through KryptiaNN.

As September begins, Nelson continues to be a visible participant in Washington’s cultural and community life. She recently attended the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture premiere for FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga alongside the Washington Association of Black Journalists. She also participated in Dîner en Blanc Washington, joining hundreds of guests for the capital’s distinctive all-white gathering.

Her commitment to leadership continues through professional service and mentorship as well. Nelson has remained involved with organizations supporting journalists and emerging professionals, including mentorship work through the National Association of Black Journalists Sports Task Force. Her growing influence was recognized in 2025 when she was named among Maryland’s Top 100 Women and received the DC Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

What makes Nelson’s story compelling is not simply the number of roles she holds, but the connection between them. Sports journalism gives her a platform; education allows her to share what she has learned; entrepreneurship gives her a way to build; and community engagement keeps that work connected to the people and city around her.

In a capital often associated with institutional power, Kelsey Nicole Nelson offers another definition of leadership: showing up, opening doors and using your platform to create connections that extend far beyond yourself.
