A Journey Through Egypt: An Evening of Cultural Diplomacy in Washington, D.C
On September 10, the Egyptian cultural and educational bureau, hosted an engaging cultural-diplomacy event that offered guests a deeper understanding of Egypt’s history, traditions, religious heritage, cuisine, music, and tourism opportunities. Through informative presentations, cultural displays, virtual-reality experiences, and live entertainment, the embassy created an atmosphere that made visitors feel connected to Egypt without leaving Washington.
The experience began with the embassy itself. Its impressive architecture and interior displays reflected the richness of Egyptian civilization. Throughout the building, guests encountered photographs, artifacts, traditional objects, and historical representations illustrating Egypt’s cultural influence across different eras.
One room celebrated prominent Egyptians and people of Egyptian heritage whose accomplishments have influenced both Egypt and the wider world. Among those featured was Hoda Kotb, the Egyptian American broadcast journalist and television personality widely recognized for her work on NBC’s Today. The display also honored internationally renowned Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah, whose success has made him a source of pride for Egyptians and football fans around the world. Another important figure highlighted was Huda Sha’arawi, a pioneering Egyptian feminist and social reformer. In 1923, she founded the Egyptian Feminist Union and became known for publicly removing her face veil upon returning to Cairo from an international women’s conference. Her work advanced women’s access to education and encouraged their participation in Egypt’s public and political life. Including her in the exhibition demonstrated Egypt’s recognition of individuals who challenged social limitations and helped shape the country’s modern history.
The embassy also displayed portraits of Egypt’s past leaders through the present day. Together, these exhibitions offered a valuable look at the people, political developments, and cultural achievements that have contributed to the country’s national identity.
Egypt’s ancient civilization was naturally an important part of the evening. Replicas and images connected to Tutankhamun and other aspects of ancient Egyptian life reminded visitors that Egypt is home to one of the world’s oldest and most influential civilizations. However, the event went beyond the country’s most familiar historical symbols and showed guests that Egypt has much more to offer than its famous pyramids.
Representatives from the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau delivered a tourism presentation highlighting destinations and activities available throughout the country. While the Pyramids of Giza remain among Egypt’s most recognizable attractions, the speakers introduced guests to numerous other historical, cultural, and recreational experiences.
The presentation included the Grand Egyptian Museum, which houses an extraordinary collection of artifacts from ancient Egyptian civilization. The images and information generated considerable excitement among the audience and encouraged many guests to imagine visiting the museum in person.
The speakers also shared an interesting architectural fact about the Great Pyramid of Giza. Although it appears to have four sides, each side is slightly concave, meaning that under certain lighting conditions the pyramid can appear to have eight distinct faces. This subtle feature is difficult to observe from the ground and remains one of the structure’s most fascinating architectural characteristics.
Guests also learned about modern entertainment and adventure tourism in Egypt. Concerts, including electronic and techno-music events, are sometimes held against the remarkable desert backdrop near the Giza pyramids. Visitors can also experience activities such as ATV rides through the desert, offering a more adventurous way to explore the landscape surrounding Egypt’s historic sites.
Another meaningful part of the evening focused on Egypt’s Coptic Christian heritage. Although Egypt is a Muslim-majority country, it is also home to one of the world’s oldest Christian communities. Representatives introduced guests to the history of Egypt’s ancient Coptic churches and monasteries and provided a virtual-reality experience that allowed participants to explore one of these sacred sites.
The virtual tour was especially memorable because it demonstrated Egypt’s importance in Christian history. According to Christian tradition, the Holy Family sought refuge in Egypt, and the country contains numerous churches, monasteries, and pilgrimage destinations connected to that history. The presentation showed that Egypt is not only a destination for those interested in ancient civilization but also an important place for religious and spiritual tourism.
The Nile River was another essential part of the presentation. For thousands of years, the Nile made agriculture, settlement, and the development of Egyptian civilization possible. Even today, it remains central to the country’s geography, economy, and national identity. A visit to Egypt would therefore be incomplete without experiencing the Nile and understanding its extraordinary historical importance.
One of the evening’s most exciting moments was a raffle for a complimentary one-way EgyptAir ticket to Egypt. Although I was not the lucky winner, the raffle created a great deal of enthusiasm among the guests and added a fun, interactive element to the program. For the winner, it offered an unforgettable opportunity to experience personally many of the destinations introduced during the evening.
Egyptian hospitality was also expressed through food, music, and dance. Guests sampled a variety of traditional Egyptian dishes, providing another way to experience the country’s culture. Traditional music brought energy to the gathering, while participants were invited to learn Egyptian dance movements and join the celebration. These activities transformed the program from a presentation into a lively cultural exchange.
The event demonstrated how cultural diplomacy can bring countries and communities closer together. By combining history, tourism, religion, food, music, technology, and personal interaction, the Embassy of Egypt and the Egyptian Cultural and Educational Bureau presented a multidimensional portrait of the country.
Egypt is widely known for the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, Tutankhamun, and the Nile, but the evening showed that its story extends far beyond these celebrated landmarks. It is also a country of living traditions, religious diversity, modern entertainment, adventure, hospitality, and continuing cultural influence.
The September 10 program was an educational and memorable experience that inspired guests to learn more about Egypt and consider visiting it themselves.
