Discovering China, One Tradition at a Time

On July 29, 2026, I had the opportunity to attend a cultural event hosted by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Washington, D.C. The event was a vibrant celebration of Chinese culture, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchange. Designed to strengthen cultural understanding between China and the United States, the evening offered guests an immersive experience that highlighted China’s rich heritage while showcasing the importance of cultural diplomacy.

From the moment guests arrived, they were warmly welcomed into the embassy, where colorful displays and informational exhibits introduced visitors to China’s history, culture, tourism, and educational opportunities. Throughout the venue, “Discover China” exhibits encouraged guests to learn more about the country’s traditions, landmarks, agriculture, and modern development. The atmosphere reflected the embassy’s commitment to building stronger cultural connections through openness and public engagement.

One of the most notable highlights of the event was the promotion of China’s 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit policy, which allows eligible international travelers to visit designated regions of China without obtaining a traditional visa. Embassy representatives presented this initiative as an opportunity to encourage tourism, cultural exchange, and closer international engagement, demonstrating China’s efforts to make travel more accessible and strengthen people-to-people connections with countries around the world. Education was also a major focus of the event, with representatives introducing guests to opportunities for studying in China and highlighting academic exchange programs available to international students, including institutions such as Sun Yat-sen University, which is recognized for its strong programs in fields like computer science, environmental sciences, engineering, medicine, and pharmacology, illustrating how academic exchange serves as an important component of diplomacy by encouraging collaboration, mutual understanding, and long-term international partnerships.

The exhibits also introduced guests to interesting facts about China that many visitors may not have known. One display highlighted that China is the world’s largest producer of watermelon, followed by India and Turkey. Guests learned how watermelon is cultivated in different regions of China, how climate and weather conditions influence production, and how this important agricultural product is distributed domestically and internationally. It was an engaging way to showcase another aspect of China’s agricultural development and offered visitors new insight into the country’s role in global food production.

The event also provided numerous interactive cultural experiences that allowed guests to engage directly with Chinese traditions. One of the most popular attractions was Chinese calligraphy, where visitors had the opportunity to have their names written in Chinese characters by skilled calligraphers. I had the opportunity to receive my name written in Chinese, making it a memorable and meaningful cultural experience.

Another engaging activity featured the giant panda, one of China’s most recognizable national symbols and an enduring representation of friendship between China and the United States. The embassy highlighted the longstanding cultural connection represented by pandas, including those cared for at Washington, D.C.’s National Zoo. Guests could participate in panda-themed activities, and I had the opportunity to receive a panda face painting, which added a fun and interactive element to the celebration.

Guests also participated in traditional craft activities, including creating handcrafted bracelets inspired by Chinese traditions and symbols of good fortune. These hands-on experiences allowed visitors to better appreciate China’s artistic heritage while creating memorable keepsakes from the event.

One of the evening’s most impressive demonstrations was presented by the embassy’s executive chef, who prepared fresh Chinese noodles entirely by hand. Guests watched the complete process as the noodles were made from scratch before having the opportunity to taste the finished dish. The live culinary demonstration not only showcased the craftsmanship behind traditional Chinese cuisine but also highlighted food as an important expression of culture and hospitality.

The cultural performances were another highlight of the evening. Guests enjoyed a beautiful traditional Chinese dance performance that showcased the elegance and artistry of Chinese performing arts. The performance offered a glimpse into China’s rich cultural traditions and was warmly received by the audience.

The embassy also featured a traditional Chinese orchestra, whose musicians performed several musical selections using traditional Chinese instruments. One particularly memorable performance was dedicated to the friendship between the United States and China. The orchestra performed a well-known American melody using traditional Chinese instruments, creating a unique musical fusion that symbolized cultural understanding and mutual respect between the two nations. It was one of the most meaningful moments of the evening and beautifully demonstrated how music can transcend cultural boundaries.

Upon arrival, each guest received a raffle ticket, adding another engaging element to the event. Throughout the evening, several lucky attendees were selected to receive cultural gifts and souvenirs provided by the embassy. The raffle encouraged participation, created excitement among guests, and further contributed to the welcoming and festive atmosphere.

Following the cultural activities, embassy representatives delivered welcoming remarks, expressing their appreciation to all attendees and emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening international understanding.
